Cetinje Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Cetinje Monastery is a significant spiritual and cultural center of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro. The current building was constructed between 1701 and 1704 by Metropolitan Danilo I after the original monastery of the Crnojević dynasty had been destroyed by the Ottomans. The monastery houses precious relics, including the right hand of John the Baptist and fragments of the True Cross. For centuries, it served as the residence of the Montenegrin prince-bishops (vladikas) and was the place where important political decisions for the country were made. The architecture is modest but contains fragments of the older monastery, such as the capitals of the arcade in the courtyard. The monastery museum preserves historical manuscripts, vestments, and the first printed Cyrillic Bible of the South Slavs.
