Morača Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Morača Monastery was founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović of the Nemanjić dynasty and is one of Montenegro's most significant medieval monuments. It is located on the right bank of the Morača River in a spectacular canyon in the center of the country. The monastery complex consists of the main church dedicated to Saint Nicholas and a smaller church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. The architecture follows the style of the Raška school, which combines Byzantine and Romanesque elements. The monastery is particularly famous for its frescoes, especially the cycle on the prophet Elijah, of which the image 'The Raven feeding the prophet Elijah' from the 13th century is considered a masterpiece of Serbian-Byzantine painting. Despite looting by the Ottomans in the 16th century, the monastery was extensively renovated in the 17th century and equipped with new icons.
