Monastery of Huejotzingo (Mexico)

Weather…

The Monastery of San Miguel Arcángel in Huejotzingo is one of Mexico's most important early colonial structures, dating back to 1524. As one of the 'Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatépetl,' it is a UNESCO World Heritage site that represents the first phase of spiritual conversion by the Spanish in the Americas. Built by the Franciscan order, the monastery features a unique 'fortress-church' design, intended to provide protection and a sense of awe for the newly converted indigenous population. The complex is world-renowned for its well-preserved 16th-century murals, particularly the 'Lady of the Apocalypse' and the intricate stone-carved 'Posas' chapels in the corners of its grand atrium, which are among the finest examples of colonial art in the world.
