Fort Loreto (Mexico)

Weather…

Fort Loreto in Puebla is a historic fortification famous primarily as the site of the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Originally built as a chapel in the 17th century dedicated to the Virgin of Loreto, the site was later reinforced and converted into a military stronghold during the 19th-century conflicts. During the Second French Intervention in Mexico, Mexican forces under General Ignacio Zaragoza successfully repelled the superior French army from this fort and the nearby Fort Guadalupe. This unexpected victory became a lasting symbol of Mexican patriotism and resistance, celebrated annually as Cinco de Mayo. The fortress architecture features thick stone walls, defensive moats, and strategic vantage points overlooking the Puebla valley. Today, Fort Loreto houses the Museum of Non-Intervention, which displays military artifacts, uniforms, and documents related to the defense of the city. It remains a key landmark within a larger historical park dedicated to Mexico's struggle for sovereignty.
