Weather…

Bonampak is an ancient Maya site located in the dense Lacandon rainforest of Chiapas, world-renowned for its extraordinary murals. The frescoes in 'Structure 1' (Temple of the Murals) are considered the best-preserved of their kind in all of Mesoamerica and provide an unparalleled glimpse into Maya court life. Dating from the late 8th century AD, the paintings across three rooms depict scenes of royal celebrations, bloody battles, and the sacrifice of war prisoners. These depictions fundamentally revised the earlier perception of the Maya as solely peace-loving scholars. The city was only revealed to the modern world in 1946 through the help of local Lacandon people. Despite its small size compared to Palenque or Yaxchilán, Bonampak was a key ally in the regional power struggles of the Classic period. The site's stelae and sculptures exhibit high artistic quality and document the reign of the ruler Chan Muwan II.
