Ciudad del Carmen is situated on an island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna de Términos in the state of Campeche. Originally a notorious haven for pirates, the area was reclaimed by Spanish forces on July 16, 1717, and the city was subsequently named after Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The discovery of massive oil reserves in the Cantarell Field during the 1970s transformed the once-quiet fishing village into the primary hub for Mexico's oil industry. Geographically, the city is characterized by its coastal setting and the rich ecosystem of the lagoon, which serves as a habitat for numerous bird species and dolphins. The economy is almost entirely driven by the activities of the state-owned oil company PEMEX, making Ciudad del Carmen one of the wealthiest cities in the region. Despite its industrial importance, the city maintains its charm through its historic center, seaside promenade, and traditional shrimp fishing industry.
