Becán (Mexico)

Weather…

Becán is a fascinating Maya site located in the state of Campeche, best known for its massive defensive moat. This artificial trench is approximately 1.9 kilometers long and encircles the entire ceremonial center of the city, making Becán one of the most well-fortified Maya settlements. The architecture belongs to the Río Bec style, characterized by tall, narrow false towers with steep staircases that serve no actual functional purpose for access. The city was continuously inhabited from 550 BC until around 1200 AD and served as a major political center in the region. Structure IX is the tallest building at 32 meters, offering a wide view over the surrounding jungle. The moat system suggests a period of intense warfare during the Early Classic period. Today, Becán impresses visitors with its monumental structures and clearly visible strategic urban planning.
