Historical site
Calakmul was one of the most powerful cities of the Maya civilization, located deep in the tropical rainforest of the Petén Basin in present-day Campeche. During the Classic period, it served as the seat of the 'Snake Kingdom' and engaged in a centuries-long rivalry with Tikal for regional dominance. The archaeological site encompasses over 6.000 structures, including Structure II, which at 45 meters tall is one of the most massive pyramids in the Maya world. The site is notable for its more than 117 stelae, which document significant historical events and dynastic successions. Calakmul was inhabited as early as 550 BC and reached its political peak between 250 and 900 AD, managing an extensive network of vassal states. Today, the area is protected as a UNESCO mixed natural and cultural World Heritage site, supporting a rich biodiversity within the surrounding biosphere reserve.

Visiting
The ruined city of Calakmul is deep in the jungle and open to visitors, but only with a guide or as part of an organized tour. Many monumental structures, including the great pyramid, can be climbed.
Typical hours
Calakmul is typically open daily from sunrise to sunset, though exact times vary seasonally. Arriving early in the morning is advisable to avoid the heat and crowds.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the site, but drones are prohibited without a special permit. Be careful not to climb on the ruins for photos - many areas are protected and fragile.
Time needed
Allow at least 3 to 4 hours to explore the main structures and climb the great pyramid. For a thorough visit including all side areas, plan for a full day.
Combine with
Combine Calakmul with the nearby Maya site of Becán or a swim in the Bacalar Lagoon for a refreshing break. The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve also has excellent birdwatching opportunities.
Getting there
Calakmul is remote in southern Campeche and best reached by car via Federal Highway 186. The final stretch is an unpaved jungle road, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
Insider tip
Bring insect repellent and long sleeves to protect against mosquitoes and thorns. Binoculars are worthwhile for spotting howler monkeys and toucans in the canopy.
