Wignacourt Tower (Malta)

Weather…

Wignacourt Tower, located in St. Paul's Bay, is the oldest surviving coastal watchtower in Malta and a cornerstone of the island's historical defenses. Constructed in 1610 under the patronage of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, it was the first in a series of large towers built to protect vulnerable landing sites across the archipelago. Unlike the smaller, later watchtowers, Wignacourt Tower is a massive fortified structure with a square plan and four small corner turrets. It was strategically positioned to deter Ottoman corsairs from entering the bay and raiding the local settlements. Over the centuries, the tower has served multiple roles, including a telegraph station in the 19th century and a coastal observation post during World War II. Geographically, it overlooks the entrance to St. Paul's Bay, providing clear sightlines to St. Paul's Island. Today, the tower is managed by the heritage trust Din l-Art Ħelwa and houses a museum showcasing military artifacts, including weaponry and historical documents. It remains one of the most significant examples of military engineering from the early 17th century.
