Swieqi is a modern residential town located in the North Eastern Region of Malta, situated just inland from the busy entertainment hub of St. Julian's. Its name is derived from the Maltese word for water channels, hinting at the area's agricultural past before the rapid urbanization that occurred in the late 20th century. The town's development as a residential area began in the 1940s, and it officially became a separate parish and municipality in 1993. Today, Swieqi is characterized by its quiet streets, upscale housing, and a population that includes a large community of expatriates. The municipality also encompasses the hamlets of Madliena, Ibraġ, and Victoria Gardens, with Madliena being particularly noted for its luxury villas and proximity to the historic Victoria Lines. Its central location provides easy access to Malta's main commercial areas while maintaining a peaceful suburban atmosphere.
