Kochkor-Ata lies in the Jalal-Abad Region at about 800 metres above sea level and has roughly 22,000 inhabitants. The town was founded in 1952 after major oil and gas deposits were discovered in the surrounding area and rapidly became the centre of the Kyrgyz oil industry. To this day it hosts the headquarters of the state oil company Kyrgyzneftegaz, which operates most of the country's still active wells. The town's name roughly means Father Ram and refers to a nearby shrine dedicated to a mythical protector of shepherds. In sports Kochkor-Ata is renowned for its tradition-rich football club Neftchi, which has won the Kyrgyz championship several times and is among the oldest clubs of the Soviet era. Beyond oil, the local economy is supported by the cultivation and processing of cotton, tobacco and maize.
