Arslanbob Walnut Forest (Kyrgyzstan)

Weather…

Arslanbob is the world's largest contiguous walnut forest, located on the slopes of the Fergana Range in southern Kyrgyzstan. The forest spans approximately 60,000 hectares at altitudes ranging between 1,200 and 1,800 meters above sea level. Local legend claims that Alexander the Great brought walnuts from here back to Greece during his campaigns, leading to the spread of the 'English walnut' across Europe. Some of the trees can reach an age of up to 1,000 years, producing an annual harvest of about 1,500 tons of walnuts, which serves as a primary source of income for the local community. In addition to walnuts, the forest contains wild apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees, making it a unique genetic reservoir for fruit species. Arslanbob is also a significant pilgrimage center, featuring several sacred sites and two impressive waterfalls that attract thousands of visitors annually. The ecological importance of the forest as a water catchment and erosion barrier is immeasurable for the region.
