Mocho Mountains

The Mocho Mountains are a limestone range in the central parish of Clarendon, forming part of the island's interior backbone. These mountains are defined by their rugged karst topography, featuring a labyrinth of steep hills, deep sinkholes, and fertile inland valleys. The elevation, which reaches up to 600 meters, provides a cooler climate than the Clarendon plains below, making it an important agricultural area for ground provisions and citrus. Geologically, the Mocho Mountains are rich in bauxite deposits, and mining has been a major industrial activity in the area for decades. Historically, the range was a significant site of resistance, with several villages established by freed and runaway people in its hidden valleys. The mountains also serve as a vital groundwater recharge zone for the Rio Minho. Despite industrial activity, large sections of the Mocho Mountains remain rural and preserve a traditional Jamaican way of life centered on small-scale farming and community spirit.
