Mason River Game Sanctuary (Jamaica)

Weather…

The Mason River Game Sanctuary is located on the border of the parishes of St. Ann and Clarendon and is a unique ecological treasure within the Caribbean. Spanning approximately 32 hectares (80 acres), the sanctuary contains Jamaica's only known upland peat bog, an ecosystem typically found in much cooler temperate climates. This extraordinary environment supports rare insectivorous plants, such as the Sundew (Drosera), as well as a variety of indigenous orchids and ferns. Established as a protected site in 1963, it is currently managed by the Natural History Museum of Jamaica, a division of the Institute of Jamaica. It serves as a critical research hub for international botanists and ecologists, preserving relict vegetation that provides insight into the island's paleo-climatic history. Beyond its floral significance, the sanctuary is a vital habitat for numerous bird species and endemic insects, making it a key site for environmental conservation.
