Halse Hall Great House (Jamaica)

Weather…

Halse Hall Great House, situated in the parish of Clarendon, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited plantation houses in Jamaica. The estate's history dates back to the British conquest in 1655, when the land was granted to Major Thomas Halse. The house was built around 1680 on the foundations of a previous Spanish structure, which is evident in its thick limestone walls and defensive architecture. Originally designed as a fortified residence, the building features gun ports and a solid stone base intended to withstand attacks from Maroons or foreign invaders. In the 18th century, it was expanded into a more elegant Georgian-style mansion with the addition of a second floor. Today, the property is owned by the bauxite company Jamalco and is used for official functions and housing. It remains a rare example of a 17th-century fortified Great House that has survived various natural disasters and social upheavals.
