Portland Bight (Jamaica)

Weather…

The Portland Bight Protected Area (PBPA) is Jamaica’s largest protected area, encompassing a vast expanse of both land and sea along the southern coast. This massive reserve protects a diverse array of ecosystems, including the dry limestone forests of the Hellshire Hills, the island's most extensive mangrove systems, and spirited coral reefs. It is the last remaining sanctuary for the critically endangered Jamaican Iguana, a species once thought to be extinct. The Bight includes numerous small coral cays that serve as essential nesting sites for seabirds and sea turtles. Beyond its ecological importance, Portland Bight is a vital economic zone, supporting thousands of artisanal fishermen. The challenge of balancing industrial development around Old Harbour with the conservation of these fragile habitats makes it a focal point for environmental management. It is a place where Jamaica’s terrestrial and marine biodiversity is preserved on a grand scale.
