Completed in 1841, it holds the prestigious title of being the oldest lighthouse on the island and the first cast-iron lighthouse ever built in the Western Hemisphere. The tower was designed by British engineer Alexander Gordon and assembled on-site using cast-iron sections manufactured in London. It was erected by free African laborers known as Kru men, noted for their maritime and technical skills. Reaching a height of 100 feet, the lighthouse emits powerful white flashes that serve as a crucial navigational aid for vessels entering Jamaican waters from the Atlantic. To withstand the fierce coastal elements and hurricane surges, a protective masonry wall surrounds its base. Visiting
Morant Point Lighthouse is Jamaica's oldest lighthouse, located at the island's easternmost point. The grounds around the lighthouse are open to the public, but the tower itself is not usually open to visitors.

The grounds are usually accessible during daylight hours, often from morning until late afternoon. There are no set opening times; it's recommended to come during daylight.
