Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey (Jamaica)

Weather…

Liberty Hall, located at 76 King Street in Kingston, was the spirited headquarters of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), founded by Marcus Garvey. Purchased in 1923, the building became a global center for the Black nationalist movement, where Garvey delivered many of his most influential speeches to thousands of followers. The hall served as a multipurpose facility, housing a school, a soup kitchen, and a cultural center that promoted African pride and economic self-reliance. After decades of neglect, the building was extensively restored and reopened in 2003 as a multimedia museum dedicated to Garvey's life and philosophy. It features a library, an educational center, and a gallery with murals depicting the struggle for Black empowerment. As the first building in the world dedicated to the history and culture of people of African descent, Liberty Hall remains a site of profound political and social importance, continuing to inspire new generations with Garvey's message of "One God! One Aim! One Destiny!"
