Dunaújváros is located on the eastern edge of the Mezőföld plain along the Danube and is one of Hungary's youngest cities, founded in the 1950s as Sztálinváros. Originally planned as a socialist model city and a heavy industrial center to serve the Danube Steelworks, its architecture bears the hallmarks of the Socialist Realist style. However, the area was inhabited as early as antiquity; the Roman military camp and settlement of Intercisa stood here, the artifacts of which are preserved in the Intercisa Museum. The modern image of the city is defined by wide roads, landscaped squares, and the sculpture park on the Danube bank, which is an open-air collection of contemporary steel sculpture. Its economy still relies significantly on metallurgy and the paper industry, but its educational and cultural role is also vital in the region.
