Frankenstein Castle
Frankenstein Castle is situated on a mountain spur in the Odenwald forest near Darmstadt and was founded in the 13th century by the noble house of von und zu Frankenstein. Today, the complex consists of an upper castle with a palace building, chapel, and towers, along with an extensive outer bailey. The castle gained fame primarily through legends surrounding the alchemist Johann Konrad Dippel, who was born here in the 17th century and performed dubious experiments. These stories are said to have inspired Mary Shelley for her world-famous novel Frankenstein, although a direct visit by the author to the castle is not historically proven. Over the centuries, the castle changed ownership multiple times and served temporarily as a military hospital and home for invalids. Since the 1970s, one of Europe's largest Halloween festivals has taken place on the grounds, bringing international renown to the site. The ruins also offer expansive views across the Rhine plain to the Taunus mountains.
