Weather…

Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt is an outstanding ensemble of Art Nouveau architecture and landscape art, founded in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig as an artists' colony. The colony aimed to develop modern forms of living where art and craftsmanship formed a unified whole. Between 1901 and 1914, four major exhibitions were held, featuring pioneering structures by renowned artists such as Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens. The most iconic landmark is the Wedding Tower (Hochzeitsturm), completed in 1908 to commemorate the Grand Duke's marriage, noted for its roof shaped like five fingers. The Exhibition Building and the Russian Chapel, built for Tsar Nicholas II, complement the architectural landscape on the hill. In 2021, Mathildenhöhe was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list due to its universal significance for the development of modernism. Today, the site serves as a museum and event venue, allowing visitors to experience the visionary design approaches of the early 20th century.
