From the Saturday before the first Sunday in September, nine days of celebration take place in the wine village and old town with around 160 wines from all Bergstraße sites. The largest South Hesse wine festival, since 1929.
In June Bensheim's clubs hold a festival in the pedestrian zone with a colourful programme and plenty of live music on four stages. A popular city tradition.
Bensheim is the largest city on the Hessian Bergstraße (Mountain Road) and is widely recognized as one of the region's most important wine-growing centers. Thanks to its sheltered location on the western slopes of the Odenwald mountains, the city enjoys an exceptionally mild climate where even almonds, figs, and peaches thrive. A stroll through the historic old town leads past magnificent half-timbered houses, the prominent market square, and the imposing hospital church. An absolute highlight located just outside the center is the Fürstenlager State Park, a former summer residence of the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt. This expansive English landscape park, featuring neoclassical pavilions and exotic trees, invites visitors to take long, relaxing walks. Hikers and wine lovers naturally gravitate toward the vineyard hiking trails, which offer spectacular panoramic views over the Rhine plain all the way to the Palatinate Forest. High above the city tower the ruins of Auerbach Castle, one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in southern Hesse, whose massive towers can still be climbed today. Every September, the Bergstraße Wine Festival draws thousands of visitors to celebrate and taste the local Riesling and Pinot Gris in a lively street atmosphere.

Morning starts in the historic old town, admiring half-timbered houses around the Market Square. Midday takes us past noble courts to the medieval Red Tower. In the afternoon, we take a moderate hike up to the Kirchberghäuschen viewpoint, where we enjoy panoramic views over the vineyards of the Hessische Bergstraße and local wine before concluding the day.
This cycling tour combines city history with stunning nature. After starting in the old town, we ride north to Staatspark Fürstenlager, an expansive parkland. At midday, we return to Bensheim's historic noble courts. The highlight is the climb up to Kirchberg, which requires some stamina but rewards you with a magnificent panoramic view.
By car, we combine the highlights of Bensheim and the Auerbach district. We start by exploring the center on foot. Then, we drive to Auerbach for the Staatspark Fürstenlager to enjoy the expansive parklands. The day ends with a short drive to the Kirchberg parking, offering a fantastic view from the Rhine valley to the Odenwald mountains.
