Marienberg Fortress
The Marienberg Fortress overlooks the city of Würzburg and serves as one of Lower Franconia's most prominent landmarks. A refuge hillfort existed on the site as early as the Bronze Age, but the actual fortress complex was developed starting in the 13th century as a residence for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. Its architecture was expanded over centuries, ranging from medieval structures and Renaissance additions to Baroque bastions designed by Balthasar Neumann. At the center of the complex stands the St. Mary's Church, a rotunda dating back to 706 AD, which is considered one of Germany's oldest sacred spaces. After the bishops moved to the Würzburg Residence in 1719, the fortress lost its significance as a residential palace and was subsequently used for military purposes. During World War II, the complex was severely damaged but was extensively reconstructed by 1990. Today, it houses the Museum for Franconia, featuring the world's largest collection of works by the master woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider.
