The former ducal residence city of Coburg in northern Franconia is a fascinating destination where European royal history impressively merges with authentic Franconian traditions. Majestically looming high above the rooftops of the old town is the Veste Coburg, one of the largest and best-preserved castle complexes in Germany. Due to its sheer, monumental size, the fortress is proudly referred to as the "Crown of Franconia," and its thick walls once provided months of safe refuge for Martin Luther. Down in the valley, visitors can follow in the historic footsteps of Prince Albert, the famous husband of Britain’s Queen Victoria, who resided in the magnificent Ehrenburg Palace. The sprawling palace square, lined with grand arcades and the beautifully landscaped Hofgarten park, is first-rate for elegant, aristocratic strolls. Alongside its grand heritage, Coburg has a highly unique culinary tradition. At the historic market square, the famous local Coburg Bratwurst is traditionally grilled over dried pine cones instead of charcoal. This age-old method imparts an unmistakable, slightly smoky aroma to the sausage that every visitor simply has to taste.
