Heidelberg is situated on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany and is world-renowned for its scenic old town and the iconic ruins of its castle. The city has a long history dating back to Roman times, with its first official documentary mention occurring in 1196. A central element of the city's identity is the Ruprecht-Karls-University, founded in 1386, making it the oldest university in present-day Germany and a major center for humanism and science throughout history. Heidelberg Castle, with architectural phases ranging from Gothic to Renaissance, towers over the city and served as the residence of the Prince-Electors of the Palatinate until its destruction in the late 17th century. The Old Bridge, built between 1786 and 1788 under Elector Karl Theodor, connects the historic center with the opposite bank of the Neckar. Today, Heidelberg is a leading location for research and technology, particularly in biotechnology and medicine, and is home to approximately 160,000 residents.
