Tübingen is a historic university city located in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, approximately 30 kilometers south of Stuttgart. First mentioned in records in 1078, it was granted city rights in the 13th century. The city's identity is closely tied to the Eberhard Karls University, founded in 1477, which remains one of Germany's oldest and most prestigious academic institutions. Its historic old town emerged from World War II almost entirely unscathed, preserving a wealth of medieval half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and a central market square featuring a 15th-century town hall. A defining landmark is the Neckar waterfront, where the yellow Hölderlin Tower stands as a monument to the poet Friedrich Hölderlin. Today, Tübingen is a prominent center for research, particularly in biotechnology and artificial intelligence. The city is known for its high level of environmental awareness and a spirited atmosphere shaped by the large student population, which accounts for a significant portion of its inhabitants.
