El Boquerón National Park is located at the summit of the San Salvador Volcano, approximately 11 kilometers northwest of the capital city. Its primary attraction is the massive El Boquerón crater, measuring 1.5 kilometers in diameter and 558 meters in depth. A unique geological feature is 'Boqueroncito', a smaller volcanic cone at the bottom of the main crater, formed during the last major eruption in 1917. The park sits at an altitude of up to 1,893 meters above sea level, providing a refreshing and cool climate. Best season
The dry season from November to April has clear views and pleasant temperatures inside the crater. Cloud forest birds are most active and easiest to spot during this time.
Best time of day
Early morning, before the mist rises, gives the best views of the volcano and surrounding landscape. Late afternoon sees many birds returning to their roosts.
Etiquette
Stay on marked trails to avoid damaging the fragile crater vegetation. Collecting plants or feeding animals is prohibited.
What to bring
Warm clothing is essential due to the cool mountain air, and sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Binoculars are worthwhile for birdwatching in the cloud forest.
Getting there
The park is only about 30 minutes from San Salvador and easily accessible by car. A short climb leads to the crater rim with panoramic views.
