Los Alcarrizos is a densely populated municipality in the Santo Domingo province and part of the metropolitan area of the Dominican capital. The city experienced explosive growth in the 1970s and 1980s when many people relocated here from rural areas and the city center of Santo Domingo. Originally, the area was characterized by cattle farms and sugar cane plantations but has evolved into a major residential and commercial center. A milestone in the city's recent history is the construction of the Santo Domingo cable car, which better connects Los Alcarrizos to the capital's public transport network. The municipality's economy is characterized by a multitude of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the employment of many residents in the service sector of the capital. Los Alcarrizos faces significant challenges regarding infrastructure and social services but has improved in quality of life through government investments in recent years.
