Bajos de Haina is a major industrial city in the San Cristóbal province, located immediately west of the capital, Santo Domingo. The city is home to the country's most important seaport, Puerto de Haina, through which a vast majority of Dominican imports and exports are funneled. Historically, the community developed around the sugar industry, but today it hosts the nation's only oil refinery, REFIDOMSA, along with numerous power plants and manufacturing facilities. Geographically, the city is situated at the mouth of the Haina River on the Caribbean Sea. Unfortunately, the city also gained international notoriety due to significant environmental challenges, particularly lead pollution in the past, which triggered extensive remediation efforts. Today, Bajos de Haina remains an indispensable economic engine for the Dominican Republic, consolidating logistics, energy generation, and industrial production in a strategic location.
