Ruins of the San Francisco Monastery (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The ruins of the Monasterio de San Francisco in Santo Domingo are an impressive testament to 16th-century religious architecture in the Caribbean. Built by the Franciscans starting in 1508, the monastery was the first of its kind in the New World and served as an important religious and educational center. Construction work spanned several decades, with the building being completed in 1560. Over the centuries, the building suffered from earthquakes, pirate attacks, including Francis Drake's raid in 1586, and wars. Nevertheless, the massive walls and the monumental facade of the church have survived, serving today as a romantic backdrop for cultural events. The monastery once also housed a hospital and a significant library. It is part of the 'Ciudad Colonial,' a UNESCO World Heritage site, and fascinates visitors with its imposing appearance and the tangible history contained within its weathered stones.
