The ruins of the Hospital San Nicolás de Bari in Santo Domingo house the remains of the oldest hospital in the New World. The institution was founded in 1503 by order of Governor Nicolás de Ovando to provide medical care for the colony's growing population. Construction of the monumental stone building began in 1533 and was a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture with Gothic influences. The hospital operated for centuries and survived numerous disasters until it was finally abandoned in the 18th century. The remaining arches and walls still convey an impression of the size and importance of this center for early modern medicine in the Americas.
