Chapel of the Remedies
The Chapel of the Remedies (Capilla de los Remedios) in Santo Domingo is a characterful 16th-century religious structure originally built as a private chapel for the wealthy Dávila family. Francisco Dávila, an influential colonial official, commissioned its construction in the Gothic-Mudéjar style, characterized by its distinctive red brickwork and rounded arches. The chapel is noted for its architectural simplicity and its tripartite facade crowned by a three-tiered bell gable (espadaña). Over the centuries, it has served various functions and undergone several restorations to maintain its structural integrity. The interior is known for its serene atmosphere and fine wooden ceiling craftsmanship. Located on Calle Las Damas, the oldest paved street in the Americas, it is an integral part of the city's religious and cultural landscape. The chapel stands not only as a place of worship but also as a testament to the early colonial period's blending of Spanish architectural traditions with local Caribbean influences.
