Holhol is a town located in the Ali Sabieh Region of Djibouti, situated approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Djibouti City. The town gained historical and economic significance due to its position on the old metre-gauge Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, which was completed in 1917. Although this old line is no longer operational, Holhol also became a station on the new standard-gauge Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, fully operational since 2018, maintaining its role as a transport hub. The town is situated in a relatively flat valley and is surrounded by arid hills. The population is primarily composed of members of the Issa clan. In addition to its railway importance, Holhol is also home to a major military academy and a military base, which contributes to the local economy. Agriculture is limited, focusing on small-scale gardens that depend on well water.
