Santa Cruz del Sur is a port city in the Camagüey Province on Cuba's southern coast, tragically famous for the devastating hurricane of 1932. On November 9, 1932, a massive storm surge nearly obliterated the town, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths, making it the deadliest natural disaster in Cuban history. The modern city was rebuilt slightly further inland, yet it maintains its deep historical and economic connection to the sea. The local economy is driven primarily by commercial fishing and shrimp farming, with the port serving as a key hub for maritime products. Geographically, the city sits on a flat coastal plain characterized by extensive mangrove swamps and its proximity to offshore archipelagos like the Jardines de la Reina. In addition to fishing, agriculture, particularly sugar cane cultivation and cattle ranching, plays a vital role in the surrounding countryside. The city serves as the administrative seat for one of the largest municipalities by land area in the province.
