Florida is the capital city of the Florida Department in Uruguay. Founded on April 24, 1809, by Father Santiago Figueredo, the city was a pivotal location in Uruguay's history. It was here, on August 25, 1825, that one of the country's three fundamental laws of independence was declared at an assembly known as Piedra Alta. This historic event makes Florida the 'Cradle of National Independence'. Geographically, the city is situated on the banks of the Santa Lucía Chico River and is an important urban center surrounded by one of the country's most productive agricultural and dairy farming regions. The economy is driven by the dairy industry, with numerous milk plants and cheese producers. The city is also a transport hub, traversed by National Route 5, a main artery connecting Montevideo to the north. Florida is renowned for its Chapel of San Cono, which attracts thousands of pilgrims, especially during its annual festival on June 3rd, making it a significant religious center in the country.
