Nuevitas is a major industrial and port city located on the northern coast of Camagüey Province, situated along the expansive Bay of Nuevitas. The original settlement was established as early as 1514 under the name Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, but it was later moved inland; the modern city of Nuevitas was founded at its current site in 1828. The bay is protected by a narrow entrance and is home to the distinctive Ballenatos islands, which are a hallmark of the local landscape. Nuevitas serves as one of Cuba's primary export ports for agricultural commodities, particularly sugar, as well as mineral resources such as chromium. The city is home to a robust industrial infrastructure, including cement plants, fertilizer factories, and a large thermoelectric power station. Despite its heavy industrial focus, the surrounding area features natural attractions like the nearby Santa Lucía beach. The city center displays a blend of colonial architecture and modern residential districts built during the industrial expansion of the 20th century.
