Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba and sits at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, famously known as "The Forks," a site that has served as a meeting place for diverse cultures for over 6,000 years. As the "Gateway to the West," the city played a pivotal role in Canada's transcontinental development, evolving from a central hub of the fur trade into a major railway and financial center. Today, Winnipeg is home to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, an architectural landmark and the first national museum established outside of the National Capital Region. The city is a powerhouse of culture, boasting the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the oldest continuously operating ballet company in North America, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Its economy is among the most diversified in Canada, with strengths in aerospace, transportation, finance, and agriculture. Winnipeg also features a significant Francophone presence centered in the Saint-Boniface district, home to the largest French-speaking community in Canada west of the Great Lakes. Despite facing some of Canada's coldest winters, which earned it the moniker "Winterpeg," the city maintains a high quality of life with animated festivals like the Festival du Voyageur and a deep commitment to social and cultural integration within its diverse population.
