Mount Logan (Canada)

Weather…

Mount Logan, the highest peak in Canada and the second-highest in North America, is located within Kluane National Park and Reserve in southwestern Yukon. Rising to an elevation of 5,959 meters, it is part of the Saint Elias Mountains, which contain some of the most extensive non-polar icefields in the world. The mountain is unique for its massive base circumference, believed to be the largest of any non-volcanic mountain on Earth, supporting a high-altitude plateau that features eleven peaks over 5,000 meters. Geologically, Logan is characterized by rapid tectonic uplift; it continues to grow taller due to the ongoing collision of the Pacific and North American plates, with the uplift rate estimated at about 19 millimeters per year, outpacing natural erosion. The first successful ascent was made in 1925 by an international expedition led by Albert H. MacCarthy, following an arduous 65-day trek from the nearest settlement. The summit experiences extreme arctic weather conditions, with temperatures frequently dropping below minus 45 degrees Celsius and hurricane-force winds being a common occurrence. Its isolation and sheer scale make it a formidable challenge for mountaineers, who usually rely on ski-planes for access to the base camps on the glaciers. The mountain also plays a vital role in global climate research, as ice core samples collected from its glaciers provide atmospheric data dating back thousands of years.
