Yorkton is located in southeastern Saskatchewan and serves as the province's third-largest commercial center. The community was founded in 1882 by settlers from the York Farmers' Colonization Company, who arrived primarily from Ontario. The original settlement site on the banks of Yorkton Creek was moved to its current location in 1889 to coincide with the arrival of the railway line. Yorkton is distinguished by its rich multicultural heritage, particularly the significant Ukrainian immigration that occurred in the early 20th century. The city is home to a branch of the Western Development Museum, which features extensive displays on agricultural history and transportation. Since 1947, it has hosted the Yorkton Film Festival, the longest-running short film festival in North America. Today, the city is a major hub for canola processing and provides essential services to a vast surrounding agricultural region.
