Rimouski is located on the southern shore of the Saint Lawrence River in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Founded as a seigneury in 1696, the city has evolved into a major maritime and scientific hub. Geographically, Rimouski is characterized by its expansive coastline and the nearby Saint-Barnabé Island. The city is home to renowned oceanographic research institutions, such as the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER). A defining moment in its history was the Great Fire of 1950, which destroyed much of the downtown core and led to a modern urban redesign. Rimouski also serves as a regional religious center with its prominent cathedral. Its combination of maritime atmosphere, academic life, and proximity to Bic National Park makes it a vital cultural and tourist pole in Eastern Quebec.
