Trois-Rivières is the second-oldest city in Quebec, founded in 1634 by Sieur de Laviolette as a strategic trading post for the French colony. The city's name translates to 'Three Rivers,' referring to the three distinct channels formed by the Saint-Maurice River at its confluence with the Saint Lawrence River. For much of the 20th century, Trois-Rivières was globally recognized as the pulp and paper capital of the world, driven by the vast forestry resources of the hinterland and the power of nearby falls. Despite a catastrophic fire in 1908 that razed most of its core, several historic structures such as the Ursuline Monastery survived and now anchor its preserved historic district. Today, the city is a significant cultural hub, hosting the world-renowned Festival International de la Poésie and the annual Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières street race. It serves as the economic and administrative center of the Mauricie region and is home to a major campus of the Université du Québec, fostering growth in green energy and biotechnology.
