Terrebonne is a historic city in Quebec, located just north of Montreal along the shores of the Rivière des Mille Îles. Founded in 1673 as a seigneury, the city has evolved over centuries from a rural agricultural settlement into a major suburban economic center. The name 'Terrebonne' literally translates to 'Good Earth,' a tribute to the exceptional fertility of the region's soil. A centerpiece of the city's heritage is Île-des-Moulins, a river island that was one of Quebec's most significant industrial complexes in the 19th century, featuring various flour and sawmills. Today, this area is a designated National Historic Site of Canada, serving as a cultural park with preserved buildings and museums. The modern city was formed through the merger of Terrebonne, Lachenaie, and La Plaine in 2001. Terrebonne features a high quality of life with extensive parklands and is a primary driver of growth in the Lanaudière region. Its historic district, Vieux-Terrebonne, showcases well-preserved colonial-style architecture.
