Gatineau lies on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, directly across from Ottawa, Canada's capital, and belongs to the province of Québec. With about 290,000 residents, it forms, together with Ottawa, the National Capital Region (NCR), home to more than 1.5 million people. Gatineau was created in 2002 through the amalgamation of several cities, including Hull, Aylmer, and Buckingham. The city is best known for the Canadian Museum of History, Canada's most visited museum, as well as the vast Gatineau Park, which extends into the Canadian Shield. French is the dominant language, making Gatineau the only francophone half of a Canadian capital region.
