The Purcell Mountains are a significant mountain range in southeastern British Columbia, part of the Columbia Mountains group. Situated west of the Rocky Mountain Trench, they are geologically older than the neighboring Rockies, primarily composed of Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. The range is world-renowned for its spectacular granite intrusions, which form dramatic spires such as those found in the Bugaboos. Rising to 3,483 meters, Mount Farnham is the highest summit in the chain. The Purcells are famous for challenging mountaineering and as the birthplace of commercial heli-skiing, which began in the Bugaboos during the 1960s. The region is characterized by deep valleys, extensive icefields, and high biodiversity. Large sections of the range are preserved within protected areas, including the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park.

Getting there
This striking mountain range is typically accessible via well-maintained highways that route through the neighboring valleys. From the main roads, numerous gravel forestry roads branch off, leading directly to the various trailheads and access points.
Best season
For extensive mountain hiking and alpinism, the summer months from July to September offer the most reliable snow- and ice-free conditions. In winter, the region is transformed into a highly popular destination for ski touring and snowshoeing enthusiasts.

The landscape is distinctly characterized by jagged granite spires, deep valleys, and easy on the eye alpine lakes. The trails range from relatively simple forest paths at lower elevations to steep, rocky scrambles that demand a high degree of surefootedness.
What to bring
Given the unpredictable mountain weather, visitors should always carry warm layers, reliable rain gear, and sturdy alpine footwear. A dedicated navigation device or detailed topographical map, along with a first aid kit, are indispensable for remote areas.

Designated parking areas are often available at the marked trailheads, though these can fill up quite rapidly during the peak hiking season. It is highly advisable not to leave any valuable items visible in your vehicle, especially when embarking on multi-day treks.
Safety
Bears and cougars are native to this wild mountain range, which is why carrying bear spray and hiking in groups is strongly recommended. Additionally, weather patterns should be monitored closely, as rapid and dramatic shifts at high altitudes are very typical.
Time needed
Shorter day hikes to nearby viewpoints can typically be completed in three to five hours of moderate effort. However, those who wish to venture deep into the backcountry or summit the rugged peaks should allocate multiple days for a comprehensive expedition.
