Kamloops is located in the interior of British Columbia at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers. The name is derived from the Shuswap word Tk'emlúps, which translates to meeting of the waters, describing its unique geographic setting. Established as a fur trading post by the Hudson's Bay Company in the early 19th century, the community expanded significantly during the gold rushes and with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The surrounding region is characterized by a semi-arid climate, featuring dry grasslands, rugged valleys, and distinct silt bluffs that define the local landscape. Kamloops is officially branded as the Tournament Capital of Canada, hosting over 100 sporting tournaments each year in its extensive recreational facilities. The local economy relies on forestry, mining, agriculture, and a robust tourism industry focused on outdoor activities. It is also home to Thompson Rivers University, a major post-secondary institution serving the southern interior of the province.
