Nanaimo is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island and is colloquially known as the Harbour City. The city's foundations were built on coal mining, which began in the mid-19th century after Snuneymuxw First Nation leaders showed coal outcroppings to the Hudson's Bay Company. A prominent relic of this era is the Bastion, an octagonal wooden fortification built in 1853, making it the oldest structure of its kind in North America. Geographically, the city is built in a tiered fashion along the hillside, offering expansive views of the Strait of Georgia and the mainland Coast Mountains. As a major gateway to Vancouver Island, it operates two busy ferry terminals connecting the island to the Lower Mainland. Nanaimo is internationally famous for the Nanaimo Bar, a three-layered no-bake dessert that originated here in the 1950s. The city is also home to Vancouver Island University, which is a key educational hub for the central island region.
