Prince George is located at the geographical center of British Columbia, at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers. Often referred to as the Northern Capital of British Columbia, it serves as the primary service and supply hub for the province's vast northern interior. The city's history traces back to 1807, when explorer Simon Fraser established Fort George as a fur trading post for the North West Company. The arrival of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in the early 20th century transformed the settlement, leading to its official incorporation as a city in 1915. For decades, the local economy has been anchored by the forestry industry, particularly pulp and paper production, with several major mills operating in the area. The opening of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in the 1990s added a significant educational and research dimension to the city's identity. Prince George also functions as a critical transportation node, where major highways and rail lines intersect to connect the north with the rest of Canada.
