Monashee Mountains (Canada)

Weather…

The Monashee Mountains are a major mountain range in southeastern British Columbia, extending 530 kilometers southward into Washington State. As the westernmost subdivision of the Columbia Mountains, they are bounded on the east by the Columbia River and the Arrow Lakes, which separate them from the Selkirk Mountains. The range's highest peak is Mount Sir Sandford, reaching an elevation of 3,519 meters and notable for its extensive glaciation and prominence. Geologically, the Monashees contain the Monashee Complex, featuring some of the oldest rocks in Western Canada, dating back over two billion years. The region gained historical significance during the Big Bend Gold Rush of the 1860s, which led to the first major European infrastructure in the area. Today, the mountains are home to protected areas like Mount Revelstoke National Park, providing essential habitat for the endangered mountain caribou. The range is world-renowned for its deep powder snow, making it a premier destination for heli-skiing and backcountry recreation.
