Cherokee Sound is a historically significant settlement on the eastern coast of Great Abaco, established in 1783 by British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution. The village is situated on a secluded bay characterized by vast tidal flats that extend for miles during low tide. Its most iconic landmark is the Cherokee Pier, which at over 770 feet (235 meters) is the longest wooden pier in the Bahamas, originally built to allow boats to reach the shore during low water levels. Historically, the residents of Cherokee Sound were renowned as expert mariners and fishermen, with the local economy once heavily dependent on turtle hunting and later commercial lobster fishing. Until the construction of the Great Abaco Highway in the 1950s, the settlement remained accessible only by sea, a factor that helped preserve its unique local dialect and traditional customs. Today, the community serves as a well-preserved example of Bahamian colonial heritage, featuring pastel-colored wooden cottages and a tranquil, historic atmosphere. The surrounding mangrove ecosystems are also vital nurseries for diverse marine life and bird species.
