The Vall d'Orient refers to the main eastern valley of Andorra, carved by the Valira d'Orient river and encompassing the parishes of Encamp and Canillo. This geographic area extends from the capital, Andorra la Vella, up to the Envalira Pass on the French border at an elevation of over 2,400 meters. Historically, the valley served as the primary connection between the central basin and Occitania, which facilitated the construction of numerous Romanesque churches and stone bridges along the route. Geologically, the valley is defined by glacial activity, evident in its wide U-shaped basins and the jagged rock faces of the surrounding peaks. The region's economy underwent a massive transformation during the 20th century, evolving from an isolated agrarian society into a world-class tourism hub, primarily anchored by the Grandvalira ski domain. Despite intensive modernization, the Vall d'Orient preserves vital cultural heritage sites, such as the Sanctuary of Meritxell, dedicated to the patron saint of Andorra. Today, the valley functions both as an ecological corridor and a spirited center for winter sports and high-altitude mountain trekking.
